Axis power were faced with a serious fuel crisis in 1941, so much that the conflict has been described as "The First War for Oil". The town of Seydisfjörður, located in Eastern Iceland, was an important military base for the British Army, and later the US Army during the war. Oil tankers were kept on hand in the tranquil town to supply the fleet, and tanks were refueled before heading to Europe, which made Seydisfjörður a desirable target. On February 10 1944 the Germans raided the area and sunk the British oil tanker El Grillo, which was fuly loaded with gooo tons of Black Oil.
